IEEE Referencing Style

IEEE/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is a numbered reference style that helps students insert citation numbers in the text of research papers in square brackets. The IEEE reference style consists of in-text citations and a complete numbered reference list.

The IEEE reference style was updated on 13th February 2026. The primary elements of the current IEEE writing style include in-text citations, author names, numerous citations, reference list, titles and page numbers.

How to use the IEEE referencing style?

IEEE reference style is primarily used in technical fields, including electronic, electrical, and computer systems engineering. The format includes two components:

• In-Text IEEE citations

In this segment, numerical in-text citations appear inside the brackets. It helps the reader to point to the related reference. You have to use the same number whenever using the same source repeatedly.

• Reference List

The reference page of the IEEE writing style includes complete source information, so the readers can easily consult and locate them. The formatting and the accuracy of the information vary depending on the source type.

How to write IEEE referencing style?

You have to place the IEEE reference style at the relevant point in the sentence, before following any punctuation marks. This writing style separates numerous citations at the same point by commas and dashes outside the brackets in a citation range. In the IEEE reference style, students treat citations as nouns within the sentence as a more concise alternative. You should never mention any author’s name in this case. In the reference page segment of the IEEE writing style, you have to insert the source title, name of the author, date of publication, DOI and publisher information.

Examples of IEEE referencing styles

1. In-text IEEE reference style

• Citations are present at the sentence end.
• Citations are integrated into the text.
• The name of the author is present before the citation numbers. If you really want to attract readers’ attention, this is the best example.
• The citation number is present as a noun in the text.

2. Multiple citation IEEE referencing style

In this citation, the student uses a comma for numerous sources and a hyphen for a range of sources.

3. Direct quotations from the sources in the IEEE referencing style

• Direct quote from the page with the page number (p) present in the citation
• Direct quote from the page with the page numbers (pp) present in the citation

4. Reference list

A complete reference list should always be present at the end. The list should have all the sources mentioned in the paper. You have to number the reference list in the order in which they were cited in the text.

Students in the technical sector use the IEEE referencing style because it is primarily industry-centric. It reduces readability because it uses unobtrusive numbered citations instead of author-date citations. It helps cite numerous sources to maintain an uninterrupted technical flow.
