5 top tips to write a great blog

A first-time blogger might have a number of concerns coursing through his mind. Blogging is a way of expression; and while there are other ways of sharing one’s ideas, a blog- if it can generate the right traffic- can help one reach out to a large number of people in a very short span of time. Moreover, while a blog could be a great way of expressing oneself, today it is being increasingly used as a tool of digital marketing as well. Bloggers are also monetizing their blogs through Google Adwords and it can open up a whole new world of opportunities. If you are foraying into blogging for the first time, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Be Unique with your Perspective: It is quite possible that the subject or topic of your blog has already been covered by some blogger at some point in time. However, does that make your blog redundant? Not necessarily. Try to look at conventional topics from a fresh perspective and offer the readers a chance to see the subject in a new light. So if you writing about online promotions, instead of simply writing about promotional techniques, which many bloggers could have covered before, write about the user feedback from the customer’s point of view and how they feel. In the same way, if you are writing about your travel experiences, give a detailed account of lesser known places or activities rather covering only the major areas which most are already aware of.

  • Address the target reader: Ideally, your blog should have a target reader base. Is the blog meant for the GenY readers, or for the professionals? Will it be informative, or creative? Try using keywords in your blog which you feel the target reader is most likely to search with. Of course, there are no hard and fast rules of blogging. You just need passion, to begin with, and let your imagination take charge. With time, you are sure to gain followers of your own if you are persistent with your writing.

  • Adapt your vocabulary: The idea of bringing in some humour to your writing cannot be stressed enough, especially if you are writing on a personal topic. With so much distraction and content available over the internet, it can be a difficult task to hold on to readers unless the readers themselves find some joy in it. Even if your blog has a factual topic, try to at least make the writing interactive and conversational, rather than simply stating facts one after another. Also, make sure that your blog offers an analysis after stating the facts- this is what most readers look for. Your blog should not be a checklist covering the important points; it should offer insight into them as well.

  • Plagiarism: Yes, this is a major issue. While there is nothing wrong about looking for ideas and inspiration from the works of other eminent bloggers, it is absolutely not okay to lift content verbatim and put it in your blog as your own. Those who follow blogs regularly might have come across the content before and when they see the same content on your blog, you lose your credibility as a blogger. If you are quoting another blogger, be sure to acknowledge the blogger by sharing the link of the original blog as well.

  • Use of Images: Continuing from the previous point, if you are using images and graphics in your blog, which are not your own, try to provide a link to the images, unless it is from a free- sourcing site.
